Vector Control Project

The Association of Port Health Authorities is currently participating in a mosquito monitoring and risk assessment project led by Dr Gai Murphy of Salford University and Jolyon Medlock from the Health Protection Agency, with support from the CIEH.  The project, which will entail intensive sampling at a number of ports over the summer months, seeks to establish: 

  • The diversity of mosquito species currently found in and around UK sea and air ports;
  • Mapping potential aquatic sites for breeding; and
  • The efficacy of a range of sampling techniques for larval and adult mosquito stages   

Following the review of current practice, the research team will work in partnership with APHA to develop a protocol for the surveillance and control of insect vector species at UK Ports and Airports. More detailed information about the project can be accessed here:
