Swine Influenza Update

26 May 2009

On 21 May 2009, the Department for Transport issued its latest Note to Transport Sector Industry Stakeholders, reflecting the Foreign Office's updated travel advice for Mexico, which states that it is no longer necessary to avoid "all but essential" travel.  As a result, the following changes took effect as of May 22, 2009:

  • Health Protection Agency staff will no longer meet all direct flights from Mexico
  • In the event that there is a symptomatic case of swine flu on a direct flight from Mexico, normal communicable disease contact tracing arrangements will apply.  It will not in general be necessary to contact all the passengers in the plane.

With regard to passenger manifests, it is recommended that plane manifests be kept for two weeks as a precaution should any passenger or crew member develop swine flu after a flight.

All queries from relevant stakeholders should be directed to James Gilderoy of the International Aviation & Safety Division, Department for Transport, at 20 7944 5807.

An up-to-date guidance document with Technical Advice for Case Management of Influenza A(H1N1) in Air Transport has been produced by the WHO, in collaboration with The International Civil Aviation Organization and The International Air Transport Association.  The document can also be accessed on the WHO website.
