Following the declaration of an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in the UK a Commission Decision (2007/554/EC) concerning interim protection measures with regard to foot and mouth disease in the United Kingdom has been introduced.
The Commission Decision has been transposed into English law under The Import and Export Restrictions (Food and Mouth Disease) Regulations 2007. The Regulations came into effect on the 7th August 2007.
Under the Regulations a ban on the export of live animals and meat and dairy products from Great Britain is introduced. There are some exemptions as to the application of the ban to products. Guidance documents can be found below.
Imports of live animals from species that are susceptible to FMD are banned.
Local Authority officers will be working closely with representatives from Defra and Animal Health to assist UK businesses in complying with the Regulations.
