Wednesday 5th December saw over 80 Port Health Professionals from the U.K., Europe and Kenya gather for a seminar on the new International Health Regulations. The seminar was a collaboration between the CIEH Port Health Special Interest Group and the Association of Port Health Authorities (APHA) which was hosted by the City of London. The intention was to provide Port Health officials with guidance and practice in the application of the regime with a view to ensuring a comprehensive and consistent approach across the ports and airports of the UK.
Delegates heard about the implications and practicalities of the new regulations, the experience in Germany so far, dealing with infectious disease on aircraft arriving in the UK and the role of the Health Protection Agency in international disease control before engaging in workshops drafting Ship Sanitation Control Certificates for vessels in a variety of scenarios.
Speaking after the successful event, Terry Nevin (President, CIEH Port Health SIG) and Mike Young (Executive Secretary, APHA) said
“This seminar was extremely well received by delegates and provided them with the legal and practical knowledge required to implement these regulations.... It became clear at the seminar that the UK and Germany are well ahead of other nations in implementing the Regulations”
