International health issues were high on the agenda; conference delegates witnessed the signing of an agreement with the German states to work together in the delivery of public health services in relation to international shipping, and welcomed port health officers from four African countries, (Mombasa, Zambia, Uganda and Sierra Leone, kindly sponsored by CIEH)
Partnership Working
Kick starting the partnership theme, the key note speaker, Charles Easmon, Deputy Chairman of the HPA, gave a thought provoking presentation focusing on an ever pressing need for closer collaboration between port health and other agencies, against a back drop of changing patterns of travel, global disease and biosecurity. Wednesday also provided a parallel day of sessions for elected members, which focused on elected members as the driving force behind the best performing, critical front line services and of APHA, as the national organisation representing port health. Members also explored the true meaning of ‘public health’ as the raison d'être of our port health services, led by Dr John Curnow.
International Health

Social Events
The social calendar of events was carefully orchestrated and fun, and included a BBQ and themed quiz, bus trips into Salford and Manchester, as well as the usual flagship event - the formal black tie dinner.
